Benelli motorcycles began life as a Shotgun manufacturer in Italy around the turn of the 19th century, making it possible the oldest surviving European manufacturer of Motorcycles. Offering a wide range of motorcycles throughout its early history, Benelli was once known for leading edge technology, including a supercharged, 4-cylinder from 1939. With the later competition offered by the aggressive Japanese manufacturers, Benelli tried everything from 6-cylinder bikes in the early 70’s to selling bikes thru Montgomery Ward. Quality control issues have plagued this brand on and off for years, until production was halted completely in 1988. The brand was revived in 1995, and is now owned by Chinese manufacturer Qianjiang, though production is still based out of Pesaro, Italy.
