Founded in 1890 as an arms manufacturer the legacy of Royal Enfield can be found in its slogan, “Made like a gun, goes like a bullet”. After supplying large numbers of motorcycles to the British War Department during WWI, the company struggled through the great depression until WWII saw its fortunes turn. By the development of the “Flying Flea”, a lightweight 125cc motorcycle designed to be parachuted into battle. Riding the wave of post war economic boom, Royal-Enfield built a number of successful models. Even producing a bike for the USA market branded under the name Indian in the late '50’s. Due to the overwhelming demand for production, Royal-Enfield became over extended and was forced to cease production in 1970. Due to previously arranged marketing agreements however, Royal Enfield motorcycles are still built and sold in India and are once again making their way to the US market.
