Pros: Does a good job of maintaining when your able to keep an eye on it.
Cons: My motorhome is stored away from my home when it's not in use. I keep this maintainer hooked up while it's in storage. The problem is that if my storage area ever has a power outage, this maintainer defaults to a "gel" mode when power is restored. My batteries are "wet" lead-acid batteries. I'm not sure how this affects how they charge, but there must be a reason that it lets you select gel, AGM, or wet.

Pros: Safe, simple, easy to use with an understandable instruction manual.
Cons: In time it will revert to "Gel" setting from "Flooded" setting
Other Thoughts: I have been a graduate electrical engineer and Ham for over 50 years so I chose this unit carefully. I use one at home, purchased one for the local Red Cross to keep their radio system ready, and two Ham friends bought them at my recommendations..We all like them. The units work as advertised and keep batteries in top shape. I use it to keep the 12v deep discharge batteries for my Ham station in top shape and move it from car, RV, or motor scooter as needed. Just works all the time.
PLEASE HELP SAVE THE OPTIMAs

Pros: Easy to use - self-explanatory labeling Ancillary components included WORKS WELL (brings Optimas back to life)
Cons: If cost is no object..... (but when is cost NOT an object?)
Other Thoughts: Between my brothers and myself we have a bunch of Optimas, some that see regular use, some that do not. When the redtops in my older Dodge diesel started to show their age (5 years old now) I decided we really needed something to desulphate an AGM. I have had a 12117 for 4 or 5 years, but never used it on an Optima, so I knew what they could do on a flooded battery. This one works great on AGMs. I added an ODB-12 on my truck for longterm use and hooked up the 12248 for a week and it acts like it has new batteries in it now. The tractor is hooked up now and the rv batteries are next in line. It will stay busy. Best buy for maintenance I have made in a while.

Pros: I haven't been able to resurrect an old battery (yet) but I'm convinced that this charger is trying hard and is the most sophisticated charger I've ever owned.
Cons: None so far

Pros: I am the Director of Operations at a large senior care facility. It is very difficult to tell if electric wheel chair batteries are bad or not. This device is what we have needed to diagnose these problems. We spend a lot of money on mobility scooter repairs. The device is well thought out and provides a good indication of battery condition.
Cons: Being color blind using more LED's in place of multicolor LED's would have been a better choice
Other Thoughts: Any electrically savy person would find this device of benefit in the testing of Lead Acid Batteries of all types!
BM12248 IS A WINNER
By Bob on Apr 23, 2012, Ownership: Use regularly, Knowledge Level: Genius is my way of life
(102 of 184 customers found this review helpful)
Pros: It doesn\\\'t got better than this. The BM12248 meets all its design perameters as described. it\\\'s compact, runs cool, and has brought back several 6-7 y/o, weak AGM batteries to full 100% charge and life. Remarkably, standing storage capacity, or, voltage retention over time characteristic as well as power delivery appear to be fully restored! Temperature sensor should be utilized on small to medium multi -cell AGM and Gel type batteries on four to eight ampere setting. It is unnecessary on large 60 AH+ batteries at the maximum 8 amp trickle charge rate rate of this unit. Be sure to bolt, clamp or securely tape sensor ring directly to the positive post of the battery being charged. Do not attempt to charge more than one battery at a time. However, fully charged multiple batteries of the same type (charactistic and voltage) may be maintained in parellel configuration (+ to + and - to -). Ampere hour capacity is critical even in the maintainance mode, as large batteries drop more quickly than small ones. Again, be sure ALL batteries are FULLY charged first. As a rule of thumb, never exceed four to six batteries in parellel per charger.
Cons: Discerning between light colors will be difficult if you are visually color deficient. Ordinary red -green 3-D movie viewing glasses easily resolves this problem. Simply look through one lens at a time to determine color.

Pros: I purchased this charger for the AGM battery bank I have in my boat. The boat has a charger but now and again I have need to charge individual batteries. This charger is perfect for that job. Good price...quick delivery...robust charger. I would recommend.

Pros: This charger, maintainer does exactly what it claims to do, if you take the time to read the instructions to familiarize yourself with its operation, it almost as simple as attaching it and plugging it in. I use it to maintain a charge on a bank of (6) AGM batteries that I keep for power outages, it gives me peace of mind to know that they are ready to go at a moments notice.
Cons: The only con I would give this unit is that in the event of a power outage, it defaults to Gel type battery setting, while not critical, you do have to unplug and reset it to the proper battery type each time the power out.

Pros: i won't say it's the best device because i'm sure for more $$ there always is something better, but for the price, the 5 year warranty, and the good people @ VDC in New York!
Cons: i paid more 5 years ago from another seller.
Other Thoughts: for the guy complaining about defaulting to GEL after a power outage, IC what they are, and this being multifunction, if you RTFM you'd know GEL is the least harmful float charge V. no it's not where FLA should be set at but in your circumstance maybe visit once a week? after owning 1 for over 4 years it begun to restart every 3 minutes. call VDC, got my RMA, sent it, got a call from their repair, and got my replacment within 10 business days. when this thing craps out i'll be upset.

Pros: I was having difficulty with my previous charger keeping my Optima battery charged. It would overcharge to the point where the charger and the battery were almost too hot to touch. I installed the BM12248 and within 24 hours my battery was charged and has remained charged.
Cons: None at this time.
Other Thoughts: Good product. I like the feature where you can set the amps and the type of battery that you are charging.

Pros: In 2008 I purchased a BatteryMINDer 12248 charger-desulfator. In 2013 I purchased a second, as an addition - not a replacement. That should tell you how well I like this unit. I have seen my automobile battery show improvement on the dealer's test after using the 12248. In 2005 I bought a used tractor with a battery that was tilted and of unknown age/condition. I leveled the battery and in 2008 began using a BatteryMINDer charger/desulfator on it. The battery still starts the diesel engine on the first crank eight years after I bought it. In addition to maintaining and reconditioning batteries, this unit has the flexibility of charging at 2, 4, or 8 amperes, which makes it quite flexible. I sometimes use it to maintain batteries as small as 17 Ah, and as large as 100 Ah, so having the range of current capacity is a big plus for me, along with its ability to restore and maintain the batteries. Service from BatteryStuff has been great.
Cons: The 2013 unit came with the same Instruction Manual as for the 2008 unit, although a couple of minor changes had been made in its construction and operation. But see Other thoughts below.
Other Thoughts: When I checked online with VDC, they said the new manual was under construction. I checked again yesterday, and the new Instruction Manual is now available online. One thing I noticed was that the new chart of charge and float voltages vs. temperatures on p. 19 does not agree very well with the charts in the older manuals, and is not referenced as are the older charts. I have a lot of experience using the charger and measuring charging and float voltage with a good (Fluke 87) multimeter. My measurements for AGM batteries are much closer to the voltages in the older manual than in the new online manual. For example, at 78°F, I measure a float of 13.45V for an AGM battery, which agrees with the old manual's 13.4V (optimum)/13.7V (maximum). But the new online chart says 14.0V Float (Flooded 13.4V + 0.6V for AGM). 14.0V is higher than the charger is working, and not correct.
Excellent Smart Battery Charger

Pros: The Battery Minder model 12248 is a top-of-the-line intelligent battery charger with an excellent warranty. I have tested it on conventional wet cell, AGM and maintenance free calcium-lead automotive style batteries. In every case it provided the correct absorption and float voltages so the batteries achieved full charge without over-charging as some of the so called "smart" chargers that I have tested do. The fact that the Battery Minder 12248 also has a temperature sensor to adjust the charging voltages for variations in ambient temp is extremely important. Battery manufacturers tell you the proper adjustment that must be mmade in charging voltages to prevent under or over-charged batteries. In cold weather you may need in excess of 15v to fully charge a typical 12v auto battery. In hot weather you need to lower the voltage to keep from "cooking" the battery. The Battery Minder 12248 does the voltage correction automatically with the temp sensor so it's just plug and play.
Cons: Battery Minder is designed by VDC electronics who appears to be a very competent electronics company. They could use some improvement in their customer support however, IMO. Their response time on e-mail is generally 3-5 days which is far too long for tech questions. In addition they tend to reply with sales gibberish instead of technical answers. You almost have to pull the information out of them over multiple e-mails which drags out to several weeks. If their is a weather issue in their area - like a snow storm, they don't respond for an additional 3-5 days. With modern tech they should certainly be able to work from home to answer customer support e-mail if they can't drive into work.
Other Thoughts: The Battery Minder 12248 has a one year Unconditional Money Back Guarantee and a five year limited warranty. This is good customer support, IMO. I have tested some other so called "smart" chargers that were not smart at all and over or under-charged a number of batteries. I returned these as they were unacceptable contrary to the claims that they were "suitable for all lead acid batteries". While the Battery Minder 12248 costs more than the cheaper highly advertised not so "smart" chargers, the BM 12248 is the real deal and the one you want if you want to be able to fully charge but not over-charge any lead acid battery including AGM style batteries. The 12248 has three current ranges 2-4-8 amps so you can charge larger batteries faster if need be or just use the 2 amp. setting for maintenance free float to keep several batteries at full charge. The Battery Minder 12248 is so good I bought a second one. If you're only going to have one battery charger, the BM 12248 is the one that you want based on my experience with numerous conventional and smart chargers.
Very flexible, Great quality

Pros: Very flexible for almost any Lead-Acid battery type Temp sensor is VERY IMPORTANT and a great feature The leads are high quality
Cons: the 2a setting is a little too much for 7.5ah SLA's - That's not really a con of the charger so much, as those are rated for 300-700ma, but I was hoping I could use it with batteries that small. The 2a setting worked great for a parallel set of 3 7.5ah batteries though.
Other Thoughts: James at BatteryStuff was very helpful and responsive with my few emailed questions. Very patient guy.

Pros: I have 2 BM12248's and they sure are handy. I wasn't aware that pulse voltage (equalizing) damaged lead plates, but learning about BatteryMINDer's special variable electronic frequency desulfating feature now has me convinced this is the way to go for SAFELY equalizing a lead-acid battery. This charger lets me know quickly if a battery is no good to begin with - it simply tests it then blinks red to let me know I'm wasting my time trying to save it. I intend to buy the 2-volt version for maintaining strings of charged. batteries.
Cons: No cons.
