What’s the Difference between AGM and Gel Motorcycle Batteries?
AGM and Gel batteries are typically mistaken for one another. Here are some points that will help you to clarify the difference:
- Absorbed Glass Matt construction - allows the electrolyte to be suspended in close proximity with the plate's active material. Enhances both the discharge and recharge efficiency for maximum engine performance.
- AGM motorcycle batteries are a variant of Sealed VRLA batteries.
- Great for high-performance engine starting, power sports, deep cycle, solar, and storage motorcycle battery needs.
- The AGM motorcycle batteries are typically not good deep-cycle batteries and deliver the best life engine performance if recharged before the motorcycle battery drops below a 50% discharge rate.
- Recently a few uninformed importers have been offering a Gel aternative to AGM powersports batteries. STAY AWAY FROM THESE! Gel batteries require a slightly lower charge voltage than what your stock powersports equipment regulator allows for. This means that every time you ride, your battery is getting overcharged, which will lead to shorter battery life!
Gel Motorcycle Battery
The gel cell is similar to the AGM style because the electrolyte is suspended, but different because technically the AGM motorcycle battery is still considered to be a wet cell. - Best used in VERY DEEP cycle applications and may last a bit longer in very hot weather applications.
- If the incorrect battery charger is used on a Gel Cell motorcycle battery, poor engine performance and premature failure is certain.
